lysosomes are organelles that contain digestive enzymes
that break down protiens, and neucleic acid. Its the digestive system of the cell.
They also degrade worn out organelles such as the mitochondria. So any cell
that is unwanted is broken down. Another function for lysosomes is to handle the
products of receptor-mediated endocytosis such as the receptor, ligand and associated membrane.

Disorders:
Inherited defects or deficiencies of lysosomal enzymes can result in accumulation of
undegraded metabolites. There are alot of specific deficiencies. Storage diseases
are usually grouped biochemically by the accumulated metabolite. some Subgroups
are mucopolysaccharidoses, and sphingolipidoses.

Sphingolipidoses: Sphingolipids are normal lipid components of cell membranes
that accumulate in lysosomes and cause alot of neuronal, bone, and other changes
when enzyme deficiencies prevent their breakdown.
Gaucher's disease is the most common sphingolipidosis.
Description:
Its spherical with a single membrane. The size is variable, but usually between 200-400mn.
In the cell the Lysosome is usually near the Golgi.

Interesting Facts:__
  • Lysosomes are found in animal cells, but rarely found in plant cells.

  • Lysosome comes from two greek words, one meaning destruction, and two meaning body.
  • Lysosomes got a nickname "suicide-bags" because of there autophagic cell deaths, which means self-destructs.
  • The cell breaks down if lysosome explodes
